The booming popularity of coffee pod machines has led to the global single-serve market now worth an estimated $10 billion and coffee capsule use is expected to double in the next five years. A report aired on Channel 9’s A Current Affair on Wednesday February 3, delved into the multiple ecosystems available on the market and the results made for interesting reading.

Aldi - Expressi K-Fee ($80)

Expressi K-Fee machine isn't particularly good for frothing milk. It also does not have good consistency from shot to shot.

Box of capsules: $5.99 (16 Capsules) or $0.37c each capsule

Espressotoria Capino ($99)

While this one is nice and easy to use, it rated poorly in Choice's taste test. It is also not good for frothing milk and temperature consistency is not so good.
Box of capsules: $6.49 (12) or $0.54c each capsule

Caffitaly ($199)

The highest rated espresso machine from Choice of the six featured. For making straight espresso shots, it has good consistency.
Box of capsules: $7.49 (16) or $0.47c each capsule

Kitchen Aid Nespresso ($799)

This one was considered good to use. It made good coffee and pulled the shot better than many others. Taste-wise, it pulled a strong shot, but lacked a bit of sweetness.
Box of capsules (Nespresso): $6.40 - $9.10 (10) or $0.64c each capsule

DeLonghi Dolce Gusto ($69)

Value for money, this is considered the runaway winner. It delivered coffee shots at the perfect temperature and delivered the sweetest shot of those featured.

Box of capsules: $8.49 (16) or $0.53c each capsule

What struck this blogger as interesting was Choice, the market researcher charged with investigating the machines, chose to review only the newly released Kitchen Aid machine for coffee capsules made to suit Nespresso’s ecosystem. With over 5 million Nespresso machines in operation in Australia alone, Nespresso is easily the most used coffee ecosystem in the country. Kitchen Aid machines are considered high-end, boutique products and have a price tag that matches. There are many other cheaper machines produced by other companies such as Breville and DeLonghi that use the same technology as the Kitchen Aid machine for a fraction of the price. An Inissia machine produced by DeLonghi for instance, can be picked up for as little as $184 in stores. Other recommended machines skipped over by Choice include the Citiz machine ($299), while the Latissima range incorporates milk and produces café quality cappuccinos and flat whites at the touch of a button.

The other glaring omission that was skipped over by the market analysis was the quality and cost of the pods. Nespresso have achieved great penetration on the back of constantly introducing new coffees from regions all around the world. This has come at a cost however for consumers, with limited edition ranges commanding up to $0.91 per pod. Aldi’s Expressi range were by far the cheapest capsules analysed, however the quality is reflected in the price tag. The same can be said for Espressotoria.

When it comes to machinery however, many Coffee Capsules 2U customers have actually noted that machines at the cheaper end of the spectrum in fact produce a superior cup of coffee. Combine the quality of these more value priced machines with pods from Coffee Capsules 2U, which can be purchased for as little as $0.25 per pod, and you have the best overall value proposition in the market. The superior technology in Nespresso machines, coupled with the superior quality coffee and capsule technology in Coffee Capsules 2U pods, leads to an offer that is both affordable and of the highest quality.

For some time, a war has been brewing in the coffee capsule/pod industry. With the expiration of many of Nespresso’s capsule patents in 2012, a number of Nespresso compatible pods flooded the market in a race to be the first with capsules to fit Nespresso’s hardware. While this change gave customers long awaited choice, there was a distinct lack of quality in the Nespresso compatible capsules that were released.

The newly available Nespresso compatible capsules/pods couldn’t replicate the same level of consistency as Nespresso, causing the pods to frequently fail in machines. For companies who managed to produce a working capsule, the quality of the coffee lacked the many subtleties Nespresso drinkers had become accustom to in their morning cup. If a company was able to strike a balance between their capsule and specialty coffee, the pods were so exorbitantly priced, the customer was left with no viable alterative at all.

Fast-forward to 2016, and the introduction of the game-changing Coffee Capsules 2U. Coffee Capsules 2U has sat back and observed the war, quietly developing a state-of-the-art capsule, along with artisan coffee that has been roasted specifically to fit into the world’s most advanced Nespresso compatible coffee capsule. Not content with producing the best capsule and pairing it with the best coffee, we have found a way to do it at HALF the price as everyone else.
